What a Concierge on a Cruise Ship Does

Reservations, requests, the lounge and logistics — the concierge role in practice.

The concierge on a cruise ship is part reservation desk, part fixer and part host. Here is what the role covers in practice, day by day.

A Concierge’s Day, From Your Side

WhenWhat the concierge typically handles
Before the cruisePre-booking specialty dining, shows and spa times where the line allows; noting celebrations, diets and access needs
Embarkation dayWelcoming you in the lounge, confirming reservations, solving any cabin issue quickly
Sea daysChanging plans, finding last-minute tables, arranging private events, answering questions
Port daysExcursion bookings, timing advice, where to meet, what to take
The last nightDisembarkation timing, luggage, transfers and early-flight logistics

The Concierge Lounge

Bartender serving cocktails to guests in an upscale lounge bar

On most concierge levels the team works from a private lounge open only to guests in qualifying cabins. It is a quieter place for coffee, a drink before dinner or a light breakfast, and the easiest place to find your concierge. Opening hours, food and drink offered, and whether there is a sun deck attached all vary by line and ship.

The lounge is also where the concierge level earns its keep on busy days. Instead of queuing at guest services, you ask in the lounge — a small thing that adds up over a week.

Concierge, Butler, Guest Services: Who Does What

Concierge

Arranges things: reservations, bookings, requests, logistics. Works from a desk or lounge for a group of cabins.

Butler

Serves you in your suite: in-suite dining, unpacking, drinks. Usually only in the higher suite categories. Cruise Butler explains the role.

Cabin steward

Looks after housekeeping for every cabin on board.

Guest services

The ship’s front desk for everyone: accounts, lost property, general questions.

Getting the Most From the Concierge on a Cruise Ship

  • Introduce yourself on day one and say what matters most — a birthday dinner, an early flight, a particular excursion.
  • Give priorities, not a long list. A concierge will move mountains for the two things you care about.
  • Ask what is possible rather than what is included; concierges know where the flexibility is.
  • Use the lounge for planning each evening; it is calmer than the main decks.
  • Pack the essentials yourself — Cruising Checklist has the lists — and let the concierge handle the ship.

Concierge on a Cruise Ship: FAQ

Do I tip the concierge on a cruise ship?

Where gratuities are included in the fare or added automatically, the concierge team is covered. Many guests still give a personal thank-you for exceptional help; it is a choice, not a requirement. Check your line’s gratuity policy for your cabin category.

Can the concierge get me a table that is fully booked?

Often, because concierge teams usually hold priority access or can work with the restaurant directly. It is never guaranteed, so make your most important requests early.

When should I first contact the concierge?

Some lines connect concierge-level guests with their team before the cruise, for reservations and requests. Otherwise, visit the lounge on embarkation day.

When the Concierge Cannot Help

A concierge works within the ship’s rules. They cannot add capacity to a sold-out excursion run by an outside operator, change the ship’s schedule, or override health and safety requirements. Being clear about what matters most, and asking early, gives them the best chance of saying yes.
